A Recipe So Fine

Print Recipe
Dougie shared this recipe for sloe gin with me shortly before he died, with explicit orders (see the notes below). This website is where we share these things today, and it increases the likelihood some of grandchildren will keep the tradition alive, but in order to keep me from a fate worse than death, it is necessary that I be bequeathed your first bottle.

Ingredients

  • 225 g sloe berries
  • 170 g cubed sugar
  • 30 g demerara sugar
  • 6 peeled almonds
  • 1 bottle ordinary gin

Instructions

  • Put the above ingredients (except for the gin) into a 1-litre bottle.
  • Then fill the gin into the litre bottle.
  • Leave for an absolute minimum period of 3-months (preferably 6-month).
  • You must turn the bottle slowly upside down & back 3-times, ONCE every day.
  • Until, finally, you drain and re-bottle this Nectar from the Gods.
  • Never be tempted to change the quantities in the recipe and never let a day go by without turning the bottle.

Notes

In Dougie's own words:
This recipe was passed to me by a very dear friend under
the strict promise that I would forever
keep it for
my own personal
Distillation.
It’s secret must only be given to your first born child
You may let the very best of your friends and family
Consume the brew
but never, ever
let the secret recipe out of your immediate family hands.

I have, of course broken that promise in handing it down to you !
So
In order to keep me from a fate
Worse than Death
It is necessary that I be bequeathed
*******
The First Bottle
from the new
brew !
